Getting Fit With Jiu Jitsu

Is Jiu Jitsu Good For Fitness?

Everyone will tell you that *enter activity here* is great for fitness. Yoga, running, kickboxing, Zumba, gym… you get the idea. And you know what? They are all correct. But they’re missing a point I think.

I could show you some data from some of my Jiu Jitsu sparring sessions. I burn about 1000 calories in 1hr15m. Yep, 1000 calories. Now to me, that means I want to get home and eat about 1000 calories to recover, but if you were someone looking for weight loss, I don’t think you’d have a more enjoyable session.

The important part of signing up for Jiu Jitsu isn’t that you’re going to burn more calories and put on some muscle. The important thing is that you’re signing up to change your lifestyle.

Let’s take an example. You could do a 6 week challenge. One of those things that people do before a wedding or a holiday. They do fat loss and muscle building, and stop eating crap, and they take a photo before and after, and they get results. And that would be great for your fitness.

And then most people just go back to the way they ate and sat on their arse before, because that’s not really fun, and it’s not really a lifestyle change, it’s a 6 week intense and unsustainable shock to the system. No one wants to live that way long term.

But if you sign up to do Jiu Jitsu, you’ll get fitter of course, but something else happens. Because now you’re training to be good at something, not just look good on the beach.

So you start to make small changes. Maybe you look to get more protein into your diet, because this helps you recover for the next session. Maybe the post-work-pints are gone on a Friday, because you like to train on a Saturday morning now. Maybe the smokes go in the bin, or you cut down on your alcohol.

When you train Jiu Jitsu, it’s long term, and its lifestyle changing.

Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Foundations course is running right now and is open for new sign ups. Get in touch [email protected] or 083-4259066

See you on the mat!
