Kyuzo at The Irish Open

Congrats to all of our competitors from last weekend’s Irish Open! We are very proud ot have had competitors from every age category in action.

We are a club with kids form Mighty Mites to Masters, and they all did us proud.

Competition Jiu Jitsu reflects a real fight. It starts on the feet, and then goes to the mat. Once it’s on the ground, you’re fighting for either positional dominance (you get points for each good position), or a fight ending submission.

What this basically means is that if you’re an effective Jiu Jitsu competitor, then you’re effective at Jiu Jitsu.

They are different skills sometimes. Some of the moves we use in competition are not applicable in a “real” fight. But the basic of how to use them are. Things like posture, movement, timing. These all matter whether you’re defending yourself or you’re trying to win a medal.

The more you compete, the better you get at Jiu Jitsu. That’s a fact. That being said, you can get everything you need from Jiu Jitsu through training in it without ever having to compete.

But competition is an accelerator. And along with it, you get the focus, the drive, the energy of putting something on the line. I love it.

Well done again to everyone. Kyuzo is a special place to train, and you all did us proud.

See you on the mat,

Barry
