We were at our Christmas party a few weeks ago and I got chatting to a few people about how they’d started in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and with Kyuzo. There was a pretty broad range of things as you’d expect, but I did enjoy hearing one reason in particular.
I have sent the “F*ck It!” email about 3 times in the last 6 or 7 years. It’s about that moment in time when you finally tip over the edge and decide to do something. What I mean is, that no one wakes up in the morning and says “Hmmm, you know what, I’ll start Jiu Jitsu today” having never given it any thought before. Everyone comes to that decision slowly over time.
The process of deciding to get fit, for example, is quite a long one. You might start by noticing you were out of breath running up some stairs, then another day you struggle to close a pair of jeans you own, and then maybe you’re shaving and catch a glimpse of your gut in the mirror. You see an ad for a gym and then you say “F*ck it! I’m getting in shape!”
And so it goes that almost everyone who walks in our door for the very first time comes to that decision slowly. They start to follow us on social media, or sign up to our emails. Then they procrastinate and hum and haw and say they will “one day”, and then months later, who knows why, they say “F*ck it! I’m joining now!”
And that was the story I heard at the Christmas party. I sent an email with a blog just like this one, and that guy joined that day!
So today I’m telling you to say “F*ck it!”
Do it today.
See you on the mat,
Barry
